The concept of digital rights is every changing as activists from all over the world battle out what all they entail. The United Nations says that people should have the same rights online as they do offline, but others feel like there is more to it than that (United Nations, n.d.). There is still a debate over the subject of whether internet access is a right at all (Pangrazio, Sefton-Greem, 2021). As the talks for the development of the UN Cybercrime Treaty continue, people feel that their human rights could be in danger as they consider more surveillance, criminalizing speech, and organizing hacking police agencies (EFF, 2023). As educators, we must teach our students to be cognizant of what they do online just as we teach them how to be safe on the streets. We can go to ISTE, International Society for Technology in Education, for guidelines and standards for our classroom (ISTE, n.d.). One thing that we know for sure is that this subject of digital rights is evolving on a daily basis. For years we have thought that socialization was through face-to-face and phone interactions, but now we are face with socialization on a universal scale making students understand online safety, etiquette, and their responsibility as a digital citizen a top priority.
